This was absolutely my favourite comment about our experience at CES in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.

Perhaps you read at the time about the show being much smaller than usual with only about 40,000 visitors, compared with 180,000 visitors registered pre-covid in 2019. Or you heard about Google and Intel cancelling last minute. Or that the show was shortened by one day. All of that’s true: the large halls felt empty, deserted, some were even closed.

But not at Eureka Park.

Eureka Park was an absolute jungle! There were so many people. So many booths. New products. New ideas. New companies. So much energy. And we were there, right in the middle of it all.

It was an energising experience. And we returned home with over 100 really good quality new leads, and a renewed validation of our value proposition in applications like air purifiers, battery-powered vacuum cleaners, drones, and connected medical devices.

We also came across some fascinating new applications where people were using sensors for the first time. Connected devices was definitely a major trend at this year’s CES with companies targeting better user experiences, improved performance and more informed decision making. All enabled by an ever-increasing number and variety of sensors.

But the most reassuring motif behind all this sensing was the desire to offer products that could genuinely help people in their daily lives. Making people’s lives easier and healthier. While at the same time saving energy, resources, and reducing environmental impacts.

It was fulfilling. And I could see the very same reason why Flusso exists being embraced by so many other companies. So, let’s innovate. Let’s reshape our world. And let’s do it together, for the people and for our environment!

Flusso is planning to launch a major firmware update within the next few weeks that will enable the FLS110 to target an even wider range of industrial, consumer and healthcare applications.

The new V7 firmware will further improve the sensor’s measurement accuracy and extend its range. It will also include a new flow totaliser function for applications where measuring the total volume of flow delivered as well as the flow rate is important.

The new FLS110 sensor module firmware will feature an improved calibration routine that can use up to 10 calibration points to deliver exceptional accuracy in the standard range. It also extends the FLS110’s working range from 200 sccm up to 2,000 sccm in through-flow, and from 500 Pa to 10 kPa in differential pressure mode.

In addition, the update rate is being doubled to 500 Hz for use in more demanding time-critical applications, such as measuring drone airspeed or for pneumatic control systems.

Flusso’s new flow totaliser feature integrates the flow rate measurement over time to calculate total flow volume within the FLS110 microcontroller, rather than users having to configure their main application code or system processor to perform this function.

The new feature will allow the FLS110 mass flow sensor to address significant new opportunities where total flow volume measurement is particularly critical. Typical applications include spirometers for lung function testing and pneumatic cylinders for use in industrial automation, machinery and processing equipment.

Flusso will notify all its existing customers as soon as the V7 firmware becomes available. It can then be downloaded from the Flusso customer portal, along with the updated SDK and other technical support materials.

And in some respects that’s certainly true.

Today’s latest air purification products will almost certainly be packed with multiple sensors, advanced filtration technology and new innovations to help monitor and improve indoor air quality (IAQ). But they all still rely on a design concept first proposed almost 60 years ago: using a fan and filter arrangement to eliminate airborne allergens and irritants, such as dust, pollen and animal hair.

When the first domestic air purifier was developed in 1963 by German brothers Klaus and Manfred Hammes, it was designed to reduce soot and dust from coal-burning ovens that were popular at the time. Their design used a filter attached to the oven outlet but, as you’d expect, it relied heavily on users remembering to change those filters.

Today’s air purifiers are no different, although most include a timer feature to remind users when to check or change their filters. But those timers are typically based on how long the system has been running for, not the filter’s condition. Users can simply ignore the warning and reset the timer, or could end up replacing a filter that still has weeks or months of useful life remaining.

The FLS110 is the ideal flow sensor to help manufacturers easily integrate active filter monitoring into their products, as well as improving system performance and costs in other areas. The FLS110 can be added into an existing flow path by simply incorporating a pressure drop element, and with minimal impact on product design because of its small size and unique integration concept.
